Joseph Shophouse

Pondicherry, India

When the remodeling of Greenridge Senior Care in Richmond for the owner/director Linda Joseph was finished, Mui Ho was hired to work on Joseph's project in Pondicherry, a historic town in India.

Pondicherry has been designated an UNESCO town and therefore all the buildings had to comply to the historic standards. They style was the typical 19th century French colonial style. To keep the historic streets buildings cohesive, buildings were required to be painted one of the designated three colors - pink, yellow and grey.

Joseph's building lot was located on one of the streets with houses already been transformed with commercial on the street level. Therefore a shophouse fro this site .seemed appropriate.

Mui Ho found it a challenge and an opportunity to learn about the building practice in the area as well as the vocabulary of the French colonial style. The primary concerns was to make the interior of these long narrow building bright with natural light. There were three courtyards for light and cross ventilation. Private entrance to the housing on the upper floors to separate residents from shops below.
