Peizheng College - China

2000

Peizheng College is located 20 miles from the nearest town - a small commercial area with several markets and eateries. To better provide for their school community, Peizheng College acquired the piece of land across from campus to create this college town and to house more students and staff.

The college town constructed by Peizheng College is a mixed-use community, with both residential and commercial spaces. The shops are located under the covered arcade, typical of cities in Southern China, to create shade for pedestrians and keep products out of the sun. The faculty and staff are housed in a three-story low rise and the students are housed either in the eight-story dormitory or in apartment buildings.

The student apartments were newly introduced to the college at Mui Ho's insistence to offer students the opportunity to learn to live independently. The dormitories that were built reduced the number of students living in each room and each room had its own bathroom and a balcony for hang-drying laundry. The commercial spaces that were created in the college town created new economic opportunities for local farmers and merchants to open small kiosks, improving community relations with the college.
