Hongnam Dorm

Peizheng College - China

2000

In designing the dormitories, the vision was two-fold: design dormitory rooms for less than 12 students per room (the standard for university dormitories) and to introduce a private bathroom to each room. Open air stairways and corridors were incorporated to account for the hot and humid climate. All dorm rooms were designed to have windows on both ends to allow for increased ventilation. Windows on one end of the room open up to the corridor, while those at the other open to the covered balcony.

The sculptural facade of the dormitories was created by adding undulating balconies, a minimal addition to costs in concrete construction. The deep-set balcony shields the glass window from direct westward sunlight.
