The Hakka people migrated from Henan area over 300 years to settle in the southern Fujian and northern Guangdong Province. Known also as the Kejia people, they built fortress like and lived in large groupings originally for protection from the local people. These clan house, made of rammed earth, can be circular, square and sometimes shape to fit the site. They are usually 4 stories with one main entry and may be two side doors. Stairs to the upper levels are located at the four corners.

The diameter of the house can range from 50 meters to 250 meters , each capable of being self sufficient for extended periods under siege. There are 2 to three wells in each of these clan houses.
