Sparksway Commons was the first affordable housing project in the US to be developed specifically for single parents with children. The primary concept of the design was to create a “home within a community” for a total of 45 units. Through interviews with single parents and community meetings, the expressed preference for their homes was to be non-apartment like in nature and was to include the amenities of a single family homes. All of these 45 houses are sited on the sloping portion of the site to leave a sizable large flat area for recreation like softball diamond and play structures.
